How can i safely remove glued in hair extensions?

i had the klix hair system for 2 years. it left me with bald spots from the metal connections and i was always worrying about "showing". i am white and have fine, thin hair. when i moved i went to the local college and spent hundreds of dollars on what appeared to be very good hair. the director supervised the whole project. the problem came in when they were removed. i have found that they use acetone to remove the glue. it has torn the extensions up horribly. i hate to think about what it has done to my real hair. what other removers can be used with the glue. the cut the weft into small sections then glued. it seemed to provide support spreading the weight across several strands. because if the damage i actually wore it in a braid for a very important function. help, plz.
