How do I remove professionally done gel nails?

About 2 1/2 weeks ago me and a couple friends went to get our nails done. so i have had them on for a little while. Today i attempted to remove them and just made my hands look horrible. I soaked them in acetone and only got the paint and half of the gel off. My hands look horrible and i really don't want to go and spend money to get them professionally removed. So does anyone have any idea how to get these off?
