How do I separate the ferric oxide from a tape without using acetone?

I am trying to make ferrofluid for my science fair. I saw a thing online that you could make it bye getting the ferric oxide from a tape bye soaking it in acetone to make ferrofluid. Does anybody know any substitute i could use instead of acetone. plz dont tell me about somthing i have to go out and buy, because that is the only reason why i want a substitute for acetone, household objects please. if there is no substitute could somebody tell me a free way to make ferric oxide?
