How can you tell when an insect is dead when using a kill jar?

I'm using a jar filled with plaster from BioQuip and acetone as the killing agent. The insects seem to be knocked out for a few hours, but then they come back to life. It's kinda bumming me out. Am I taking them out to early? Not using enough acetone?
